Most antique fireplace mantels now described as Pompadour, however, were made during the 19th century rather than during her lifetime. They offer a more restrained reinterpretation of the flowing forms and refined ornament of 18th-century French rococo for later domestic interiors.
Compared with more elaborate Louis XV mantels, the Pompadour model is generally more restrained in execution. Its characteristic composition typically combines a moulded or gently serpentine shelf, a shaped frieze centred on a medallion, and curved or canted jambs. Some examples feature restrained panelling or light floral carving, but the overall composition remains balanced and relatively simple. Material, scale and decorative detail vary according to the workshop and original commission.
Paris was transformed from 1853 under Napoléon III and Haussmann, when thousands of apartment buildings were constructed or rebuilt.
