This exceptional 18th-century Port d'Or marble block has survived in its substantial original form and still displays clear traces of traditional hand stoneworking. Its irregular rough faces contrast with the more exposed surfaces, giving the block a strong historical and material presence.

According to the historical company provenance, the block was acquired by Maison Léon Van den Bogaert in the early 1990s, when the complete stock of Rocamat in Corgoloin was taken over as part of a reorganisation and further automation. That stock included old marble blocks, slabs, flooring lots and finished natural stone products in French materials such as Comblanchien, Buxy, Campan, Brèche, Rouge du Languedoc and Rose Liseron.

Visually, this block is particularly expressive. A deep anthracite-grey to almost black ground is crossed by a fine network of white and pale grey veins. Across this dark field appear striking natural formations in gold, ochre, honey, rust and warm brown, creating irregular islands and flowing brecciated structures.

Some faces show a relatively restrained and graphic pattern dominated by fine linear veining, while others reveal a much richer, almost abstract composition of golden inclusions against the dark marble. This variation makes the block especially compelling as an object with a narrative, in which geology, historic extraction and human craftsmanship remain simultaneously visible.

The block can be preserved in its current form as a sculptural architectural object, pedestal or statement piece. At the same time, the massive stone retains significant potential for further transformation. It can be professionally sawn into marble slabs, arranged as bookmatched panels, or used for wall cladding, flooring, basins, washstands, tabletops, pedestals, columns and other bespoke architectural elements.

Because of the highly variable internal veining, the compositions that may emerge when the block is cut cannot be fully predicted. New sections may reveal hidden golden breccias, delicate white veins and deeper black zones, making every future slab unique.

With net dimensions of 65 cm x 64 cm x 17.5 cm and a weight of 275 kg, this block has a compact yet powerful architectural presence.

A distinctive piece for architects, interior designers, stonemasons and collectors who view authentic 18th-century marble not simply as a material, but as a historic object with its own narrative.
