These square black natural-stone tiles are produced by resawing authentic antique reclaimed European floor tiles. The historic material is precisely recut into 20 or 30 cm squares with clean, straight edges. Larger square formats can be produced on request, subject to the dimensions and availability of the antique source material.

After resawing, the visible face is carefully sanded to create a smooth and refined finish. This process reveals the natural colour and mineral structure within the old stone. The historical value resides in the antique reclaimed material, while the regular geometry and smooth surface result from recent, precise workmanship.

The stone displays a nuanced palette ranging from deep black and charcoal to softer grey-blue tones. Pale natural inclusions and subtle tonal differences keep the precise square geometry visually engaging. Because every tile originates from historic material, no two pieces are completely identical.

The square shape and straight edges allow multiple design possibilities. Installed as a monochrome black floor, the tiles create a calm architectural grid with a strong minimalist presence. They can also be incorporated into geometric compositions, borders or framed floor designs.

They are particularly effective as the black accent in a sophisticated checkerboard floor. Combine them with white or cream marble, pale limestone, warm grey-beige stone or another technically compatible contrasting tile. The black stone adds depth and definition, while the lighter material introduces rhythm and brightness.

The 20 cm format produces a finer, more dynamic checkerboard pattern suited to entrance halls, kitchens, bathrooms and smaller spaces. The 30 cm format creates a calmer, more generous scale for living spaces, galleries, boutiques, restaurants and larger hallways. Larger bespoke squares are available on request for more monumental interiors.

After installation, a compatible colour-enhancing sealer can deepen the black tones and increase the lustre of the sanded surface. A neutral sealer will retain the softer grey-blue appearance for a more understated, matte atmosphere. Always test the selected treatment on an individual tile first.

Complementary variations within the same collection include:

  • Linear tiles in different lengths for borders and frames around a checkerboard composition.
  • Random-size tiles with irregular sides for a free Opus Romain-inspired layout.
  • Larger square formats on request, subject to the available antique source material.

Condition: The source material consists of antique reclaimed floor tiles. Wear and condition are consistent with age and use. The current tiles have been recut with straight edges and their visible faces sanded. Ready for installation.

When combined with another stone in a checkerboard floor, a professional installer should verify the thickness, calibration, joint width and technical compatibility of both materials.

An authentic European natural-stone floor combining historic material with timeless geometry, offered by The Antique Fireplace Bank and Maison Léon Van den Bogaert.
