A fireback is a heavy cast-iron plate traditionally positioned against the rear wall of a fireplace. Historically, it helped protect the masonry from direct heat while absorbing and returning part of the fire’s warmth to the room. Its visible surface also offered an opportunity for decorative and symbolic expression.
Firebacks were produced using moulds into which molten iron was cast. Depending on the period, region and original commission, the design could incorporate dates, initials, heraldic emblems, royal arms, religious imagery, mythological figures, hunting scenes, animals, floral motifs or classical ornament.
