Explore more than 80 antique fireplace tool sets, fire irons, shovels and tongs, carefully sourced across Europe. The collection includes complete matching sets, compatible fireside ensembles and later-composed marriages in wrought iron, brass and bronze. Many pieces date from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries.
From robust hand-forged tools for large kitchen hearths and country-house fireplaces to elegant brass and bronze ensembles for refined interiors, each set is selected for its craftsmanship, material, patina, proportions and historic character. Depending on its construction and condition, a set may be chosen for appropriate practical use or displayed as a sculptural fireside accessory.
The traditional term fire irons refers to tools historically used to manage logs, embers and ash. A fireplace tool set may include a shovel, tongs, poker, fork or other specialised implements. Some ensembles also retain a compatible stand for organising and displaying the tools beside the hearth.
There is no fixed number of pieces required to form a historic set. Compact ensembles may contain two tools, while larger sets can comprise three, four or more elements. The included pieces, dimensions and available information about their age and condition are documented on each product page.
Some tools have remained together as matching historic sets. Others are described as marriages: individually antique tools that were brought together later because their period, material, proportions and patina form a harmonious ensemble.
A marriage can offer the same decorative coherence as a matching historic set, but it should not be presented as a group that has necessarily remained together since manufacture. Where known, this distinction and any relevant restoration are stated on the individual product page.
Hand-forged wrought iron forms an important part of the collection and may display hammered surfaces, twisted shafts, scrolling forms and decorative finials. Brass and bronze introduce warmer colours and more reflective accents. Natural oxidation, historic wear, colour variation and earlier repairs can form part of the authentic character of each piece.
When choosing a set, consider the height and width of the fireplace opening, the length and weight of the tools and the available space beside the hearth. Individual fireplace shovels and tongs can replace a missing element, while an antique fireplace tool stand can provide an appropriate display for compatible pieces.
Complete the setting with an antique fireback, a pair of antique andirons or a fire basket. A suitably proportioned fireplace screen can add a further decorative and protective layer.
When antique tools are intended for use with an active fire, we recommend checking their condition, length, stability and suitability for the particular fireplace and fuel type.
With family expertise passed down through more than three generations, The Antique Fireplace Bank selects each ensemble for its authenticity, craftsmanship, material quality, patina and decorative value.
Before dispatch, every set receives a final condition check. Product pages provide detailed photographs, dimensions in centimetres and inches, condition information, the number of included pieces and current availability. Personal guidance and worldwide delivery are available.
