Monumental Cast Iron Fountain

This 19th century French cast iron fountain with three cherubs, a stork and a large round basin is a spectacular architectural garden element with exceptional decorative presence. Designed as a central fountain, it combines sculpture, water, symbolism and classical garden architecture into one highly expressive statement piece.

The composition is built around three finely modelled putti standing back to back around a central floral support. Above them rests a richly decorated upper basin with carved-style leaf and shell ornamentation, crowned by the water spout. At the base, the fountain is enriched with garlands, scrolls, shells, floral motifs and classical mouldings, creating an elegant rhythm from the lower pedestal to the upper dish.

The presence of the stork adds an important symbolic layer. Traditionally associated with fertility, renewal, protection, family and the return of life, the bird reinforces the fountain’s poetic character. Together with the cherubs — symbols of innocence, joy and abundance — the fountain becomes more than a water feature: it becomes a sculptural story of movement, nature and celebration.

The warm painted surface gives the cast iron the appearance of aged terracotta or weathered stone, while still retaining the strength and durability of iron. The material can be repainted, allowing designers to adapt the fountain to a classical French garden, a Provençal courtyard, an Italianate terrace, a château entrance, a formal parterre, an orangery, a hotel garden, or even an indoor atrium or wellness interior.
