Cast-Iron Fireplace Inner Frame with Medallions and Birds — 96 cm

This original old cast-iron fireplace inner frame, measuring 96 cm wide, brings finely detailed French-inspired ornament to a smaller fireplace surround. It bridges the space between a marble or stone mantel and the fire opening, reducing the visible mantel aperture.

The straight frieze and slender side panels frame a rectangular opening measuring 65 by 57 cm. Inward-sloping surfaces create depth, while delicate beaded borders define the edges. A rectangular figural relief occupies the centre of the frieze, enclosed in an ornamental frame and flanked by scrolls and leafy sprays. Birds perch above oval medallions containing small mask heads on the uprights. Below, curling foliage leads into classical vase motifs. Plain plinth blocks provide a restrained base for this intricate decoration.

The finish appears black to charcoal, with glossy highlights on the raised details. Light picks out the birds, beading and medallions against the dark ground, revealing the depth of the casting. White marble emphasises the crisp outline; beige limestone, aged oak and linen introduce a warmer, rustic setting. Alongside contemporary furniture and modern art, the frame adds historical detail without overwhelming the room through scale.

Condition and wear are consistent with age and use. The frame is ready for installation and, as an old cast-iron element, may be slightly twisted. Its height can be adapted to the customer’s requirements by agreement. The recessed profile and 16.5 cm depth should be considered when planning the fit.
