This 16th century French fireplace surround has an unusually minimal design: a flat, straight lintel on two square jambs, with almost no carved ornament. The result is a quiet, architectural silhouette that feels strikingly contemporary for its age.
Carved from fossil stone quarried in the Beaujolais region, the surface moves from deep charcoal and graphite to warm ochre-brown, finished with a smoky, brushed "canon de fusil" patina. Depending on the light in the room, the polished faces catch and reflect it differently throughout the day, giving the stone extra depth.
Dozens of small fossilised shells are visible across the stone, frozen in the rock long before it was carved. Inner side jamb is left raw and hand-tooled, the other smoothed and reflective — a deliberate contrast between rough quarried stone and refined, light-catching surface.
This character suits a coastal or beach house interior, but works equally well in an apartment or a timeless French or contemporary interior — an authentic, unusual architectural focal point for a living room, office, bedroom or veranda.
Wear and condition are consistent with age and use, including small restorations. This surround remains in its original state. Maison Léon Van den Bogaert can provide cutting to one straight line at the back for installation against a flat wall.
