This exceptional 15th-century pair of wrought iron andirons represents one of the finest examples of Burgundian Medieval and Early Renaissance craftsmanship. Hand-forged between 1450 and 1500, these monumental iron fire-dogs display the unmistakable marks of pre-industrial mastery, including hammered surfaces, torsion techniques, local thickening, and traditional fire-welding.

Masterfully Hand-Forged Iron

Every element—vertical standard, tri-lobed Gothic legs, long back bar and intermediate arm—was shaped entirely by hand using medieval blacksmithing techniques. The subtle asymmetry of the tapered shafts confirms their authentic, artisanal origin.

Monumental Acorn Finials

The tall uprights are crowned with superb acorn-shaped finials, a symbolic Renaissance motif representing strength, fertility, and continuity. A second, smaller acorn finial adorns the intermediate arm, an extremely rare luxury detail seldom seen in the 15th century.

Architectural Gothic Feet

The three-part S-shaped legs provide outstanding stability and are characteristic of French and Burgundian ironwork of the Late Middle Ages. Their sculptural form evokes the architectural vocabulary of Gothic stone tracery.

Museum-Quality Preservation

Pairs of this height, refinement, and completeness are exceptionally rare. Comparable examples can be found only in major museum collections such as the Musée de Cluny, Musée des Arts Décoratifs, the Rijksmuseum, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
