A cast-iron inner frame surrounds the firebox opening within the larger opening of a decorative mantel or fireplace surround. It can visually reduce a wide or tall fireplace opening without diminishing the character of the outer marble or stone surround.
Dark cast iron creates a strong contrast with white or veined marble. Combined with beige limestone or Burgundy stone, it produces a warmer and more restrained composition.
An inner frame is not the same as a fireback. An antique fireback is traditionally positioned against the rear wall of the firebox, whereas the inner frame surrounds the opening at the front. Both can be combined with original firebricks, antique andirons or a fire basket to create a complete fireplace composition.
Their decorative potential is not limited to classical interiors. Black and anthracite cast iron, sculptural reliefs and traces of historic use can also provide a strong architectural accent alongside contemporary art, clean-lined furniture and minimalist interior design.
Always compare the exterior width and height of the inner frame with the available opening of the fireplace surround. The interior width, interior height, depth, plinth height and weight must also be considered.
The current online collection ranges from approximately 86 to 142 cm in exterior width. The dimensions and proportions of the actual firebox opening, however, vary considerably between individual pieces.
Exterior measurements alone are not sufficient. The profile, recessed or inward-sloping surfaces, shape of the upper line and available installation depth all influence how the frame can be fitted within the surround. On certain examples, the height may be adjusted by prior agreement.
Old cast iron may display natural wear, oxidation, earlier repairs, small expansion cracks or slight distortion. These characteristics form part of the history and authenticity of the object and are documented on the individual product page where relevant.
Always have the fit, technical suitability and installation assessed by an experienced professional. A historic inner frame is not a standardised modern building component. Its dimensions, condition, fireplace construction and intended use must be evaluated individually for each project.
